Define lucid dreaming - the REAL definition

It seems like everyone tends to define lucid dreaming in their own way. Some define lucid dreaming as “realizing one is dreaming while they are still dreaming.”

Others say you need more than that: “when one realizes one is dreaming while inside the dream and can control the dream.”

Another one I’ve heard: “you must realize you are dreaming, and also know you have a physical body back in your bed.”

The closest to the “real” definition of lucid dreaming is the first: “realizing one is dreaming while they are still dreaming.”

There is no “Real” Definition of Lucid Dreaming

What definition is real depends on the person. There is no one real definition as even if one defines lucid dreaming in the most popular way “awareness that one is dreaming while inside a dream,” there are many levels of that awareness.

1st Level: Low Level Lucidity

For example, you can have a certain level of realization, what I call a lower level lucidity where you simply find yourself doing things that you can’t normally do in waking life.

You just accept it without question and don’t even really try to explore it with any thought or experimentation, you just do.

2nd Level: Intermediate Lucidity

The next level up from that I call intermediate lucidity and that is when you are also doing things you can’t normally do in waking life, like flying, or jumping high, or putting your hands through walls.

But this time there is a sense of more conscious exploration. You find you can jump a bit higher than normal, so you try to jump even higher, then higher, and you see how much you can push it.

Or you start running fast, then realize if you try you can run as fast as the cars next to you.

There is a type of conscious exploration where you are experimenting with the laws of this new world, but there is not yet the high-level cognitive understanding that you are dreaming and this is why you can jump like superman.

3rd Level: High Level Lucidity

The next level I call high level lucidity. Here, your critical mind activates inside the dream and you realize you are in the dream world. You might say “this is a dream” out loud, or simply think it.

You may or may not think about your body back in your bed. On the upper end of high level lucidity you remember the intention you set for yourself when going to sleep. You remember the action you want to take. Whether it is to fly, to ask your subconscious questions, or to improve your skills in waking life.

4th Level: Advanced Lucidity

The highest level I call advanced lucidity. This is where you can completely control your dream. This is a very wide spectrum.

This goes from being able to manifest a simple object like a spoon, all the way to multiplying your consciousness into a thousand dream characters and perceiving from all of them at once.

In this arena one has the thorough understanding that they are in the dream world and therefore the only limits are those they put on themselves.

Most of us are so conditioned by living all our lives in our physical bodies, that when we start to spend more time conscious in our dreaming body, the laws of the physical world seem to get imprinted in our dream world.

Maybe we take off to fly and bounce off the ground. Or we simply can’t fathom or don’t think of doing something, simply because we are conditioned everyday in the physical world that it isn’t possible.

The possibilities are infinite.

Finished with video? Next…

Many people I talk to say they want to learn how to lucid dream tonight.

Or they want to lucid dream instantly.

Or they want to lucid dream RIGHT NOW IN THIS MOMENT!

While I completely understand the desire and appreciate the excitement, this excitement can sometimes lead one astray when journeying on the lucid dreaming path.

Why?

Because you get…

The Initial Burst of Energy

What normally happens is a person reads about lucid dreams, hears about it from a friend, or sees a movie like “Inception,” and gets an initial burst of excitement that causes them to want to learn to lucid dream TONIGHT. They use that initial burst of energy to catapult them into researching techniques on how to lucid dream, or maybe even buying a book or a course like Lucid Dreaming Mastery that we offer here at Lucid Academy.

The Crippling Internal Expectation

Often this person has set an internal expectation that they will put in a certain amount of effort, and if they get the results they want, they will continue. If they don’t, then they give up lucid dreaming completely.

The Holy Grail of Sustained Enthusiasm

The problem with this is that sustained enthusiasm is the best way to success with lucid dreaming. The kind of enthusiasm that has you excited to go to bed every night, and does not leave you frustrated in the morning if you do not achieve a lucid dream.

Lucid Dreaming Mastery

Now if they are lucky enough to purchase a course like Lucid Dreaming Mastery, then they are well taken care of, and are very likely to succeed in their quest. But if they just go online, read about a bunch of techniques, and try to figure it out all on their own, it will be a harder journey.

Should I Switch Techniques?

The tendency comes to constantly switch techniques or add something new into the mix in the hope that it will help lucid dream tonight. This brings problems because when one constantly switches techniques it is like digging for oil with 15 small holes instead of 1 deep hole that will strike the well.

How to Lucid Dream Tonight

Lucid Mastery Shortcut

Now if you are one of those people who do want to learn how to lucid dream tonight, then there are certain techniques you can use that give you a chance at doing that. But it is certainly not a guarantee.

There are great combinations of proven techniques that can drastically speed up your results and give you a taste of the incredible power of lucid dreaming.

These techniques are displayed in detail in our special course: Lucid Mastery Shortcut. But to get access to this special course you must first purchase the main Lucid Dreaming Mastery course. Enter your email into the form on the right or at the bottom of this post for more information.

Building a Solid Foundation…Be Like Rock

This is because I want you to build a solid foundation in lucid dreaming. I’d love for every one of you to learn how to lucid dream tonight, but I want even more for every one of you to master lucid dreaming and be able to lucid dream for the rest of your life.

Your Sensational Lucid Adventures

I would love you to be able to soar like a bird through the sky any night you wish. To receive secret teachings, to fulfill your deepest fantasies, to go on wild adventures, and even to improve your real-world skills.

While learning how to lucid dream tonight will give you a taste of these experiences, mastering lucid dreaming will give you these experiences on tap.

Channel Your Energy Into Your Foundation

So if you feel like you want to learn how to lucid dream tonight, or lucid dream instantly, then take that energy and channel it into an intention to remember your dreams.

Buy a dream journal and start writing down your dreams every morning to boost your dream recall. That’s the first step in building your foundation.

Oh and if you are really serious about learning to lucid dream, make sure to sign up for our email list so you can qualify for our video course that teaches you to lucid dream….the right way.

At a deeper level, one’s biggest fear is of the light, and not of pain. Your greatest fear is ecstasy, because this ecstasy, which is the same as light, dissolves all darkness. If you are identified with the darkness, you become afraid of disappearing.

The Dream Within the Dream: Notes from Swami Vivekananda Saraswati

You do not necessarily find wisdom if you are just exploring endless astral worlds. This is just horizontal exploration. It does not necessarily lead anywhere. Yet, you can find Akashic Records, or The Astral Library, and be a genius.

This will not show you the way out of samsara, it will just make you run in circles. Horizontal exploration is not the way to freedom. You can go higher.

You can use astral projection as a trampoline to spring board you further up into higher levels of consciousness. You can go further up with your spiritual quest, and not be diverted horizontally to exploring the astral world curiously like a cat.

The astral body is an eye opener to the next levels. As beautiful as the divine human body is, when you see the other realities, you realize death is the reward.

With yoga of the clear light you discover that the body is an illusion of a different degree. The physical illusion, and the astral illusion, are different by a matter of degree. They are only a dream within a dream, but which is the dream within the dream?

The clear light represent the divine nature. It is called The Buddha Nature. That shines through in the phenomenon of sleep. The yoga of clear light has the rare potential to shine through right when you fall asleep.

This moment is called the hiatus. The hiatus is like the universe blinks for a moment. The hiatus is the divine consciousness. You get a glimpse of it when you fall asleep. When you feel like you are falling in sleep is the hiatus. Your brain is confused.

Your first reaction is that you are weightless. If you were aware when that occurs then a clear light would flash. If you could catch that second, then you could look in the eyes of god.

It is a transition.  To be aware in your sleep you have to use the power of suggestion.

Make a commitment in your mind to acknowledge you are dreaming before you fall asleep.  Fall asleep with a purpose. Point the arrow don’t just shoot in the dark. Theoretically, everyone should fall asleep with a purpose.

There is a rebellion inside of you deterring you. Man is his own worse enemy. We shoot ourselves in the foot all the time.

We need perseverance.

Five minutes before you go to sleep prepare for the astral launch. It is a matter of surpassing your own existential category, passing your karmic limitations. If you succeed, you are a very special person.

Notes from Swami Vivekananda Saraswati

People ask, Why would I train to have out-of-body experiences, lucid dreaming and astral projections? Isn’t that the ego? Most yogis would rather elevate their consciousness. Life is short, temptation is vast, and I don’t know that I will have the time to reach those extraordinary things.

If I have paranormal powers will that give me self realization, will it make me happy? If I can impress people in a party by bending a spoon with my mind isn’t that just an inflation of my ego? There is a subconscious danger when it comes to paranormal things. You may be able to do readings, but where is the wisdom?

Where is the spiritually realized person?

Yet, astral projection has a direct spiritual impact. The astral projection is very much related to conscious, death and the dying process. When you astrally project you get phenomena which are very, very similar to what is happening when you die.

The problem with sleep, and with death is that they often happen unconsciously.

“He that dies before dying, dies no more.”

~ Zen Buddhist dictum

Death is not supposed to happen unconsciously. To be able to go in a conscious death is much easier is if you have gone consciously into your sleep many times before. To exist in your astral body, and look down and see your body in bed gives the fundamental awareness that you are not just your physical body. This is the first step of the vedantic and spiritual awareness.

To die before death means to reach astral projection, which means to go outside of your body. Your involuntary dreams are unconscious phenomenon of astral projection. You have to go out of the body consciously and deliberately. If you have done that a hundred times then, when death is coming, you are already out of the body.

5 Step Guide to Lucid Dreaming for Beginners

In the beginning lucid dreaming is an incredibly mysterious and exciting affair. I can tell you from experience that this feeling doesn’t go away if you continue to explore deeply. Lucid dreaming is incredible in this way, it only goes deeper and deeper.

So what is the first step in the guide to lucid dreaming?

1. Improve Your Dream Recall

The first step when you want to build a house is to do what? Build a foundation. When you are building your lucid dreaming house you don’t want to start with the roof and go right into doing the induction techniques without achieving a certain proficiency in your dream recall. If you do go straight to induction techniques you could even have success early, but in my experience it is often not sustainable success. When it drops off for a bit, people have nothing to fall back on. To improve your dream recall it is very simple: buy a dream journal and write down your dreams in the morning.

2. Improve Your Prospective Memory

Prospective memory is the ability to remember something at the proper time once you have decided to do so. For example, when you have to make it to work on time in the morning but don’t have an alarm clock you decide you need to wake up at a certain time. When you wake up in the morning at that time you are using your prospective memory. When you have a strong prospective memory all the techniques of lucid dream induction become much simpler. Out of the 5 steps in this guide to lucid dreaming, this type of memory can probably be most useful in numerous other parts of your life as well as in learning to dream consciously.

3. Perform Reality Checks

Reality checks are what help you determine whether you are in waking life or the dream world. They become an integral part of a lucid dreamers arsenal, because one must know the reality they are in. There are many types of different reality checks, some work well and others simply are not worth the time. When you do these reality checks every day they move into your dreams and you naturally start to have lucid dreams.

4. Use Lucid Dreaming Induction Techniques

Once your foundation has been built, you are remembering your dreams at night, your prospective memory is strong, and you are performing reality checks, then you can move on the the crowning jewel of lucid dreaming: the induction techniques. The induction technique you choose will be the roof on your lucid

dreaming house. The technique I recommend most for this guide to lucid dreaming for beginners is MILD. It stands for Mnemonic Induction of a Lucid Dream. This technique won’t mess up your sleep schedule, is relatively easy to perform, and often gives quick success for beginners.

5. Practice Consistently

If someone came up to me and asked “What is the single most important thing I need to know in order to have success with lucid dreaming?” I would reply in a heartbeat: practice consistently. Practice consistently! So many people just want a quick gain out of lucid dreaming. They only give it a week, 2 weeks, a month, then stop. Approach this as if you will be learning an incredibly valuable skill for the rest of your life. To have success with this valuable life-long skill, practicing consistently is the key.

What are 5 benefits of lucid dreaming? There are many psychological and health benefits that lucid dreaming can provide. This article will go over just 5 of the countless incredible effects you can receive. Just know that you are the only limit to your potential in the dream world.

Get Life-Changing Information From Your Subconscious

Imagine for a second that you had a jewel that you could ask any question and it would answer.

This jewel could tell you anything you wanted to know about yourself.

Things you have locked away inside. Potentials that can be released. Great memories, untapped skills.

This jewel exists when you lucid dream. When you dream you are in direct contact with your subconscious mind.

This direct access is a treasure and one of the benefits of lucid dreaming, but only if one knows how to utilize it correctly.

Becoming conscious in your dreams is the first step. Asking for what you want is the second. Ask and ye shall receive.

Do Anything You Want in Your Dreams, Naughty or Nice

We all have desires, fantasies, and wants that go unfulfilled during the course of our lives.

When you lucid dream, all these desires can be satisfied so you don’t have to obsess over them. You can experience whatever your deepest fantasy may be: talk about the meaning of life with Einstein, make love with a celebrity, sail the cosmic oceans on a spaceship, or have a picnic in the middle of the earth.

No matter what your desire is you can fulfill it in your dreams. Once you have tasted this desire, it can be a great opportunity to see where in your being that strong desire comes from as well.

5 Benefits of Lucid Dreaming - Better SleepSurprisingly Better, Blissful, and More Restful Sleep

Bringing more awareness to your sleep and dreams gives you more restful sleep.

True relaxation occurs when you are able to relax while maintaining consciousness.

That’s lucid dreaming and lucid sleep in a nutshell.

We feel that we relax when we sit in front of a TV, but in reality we are simply taking in more and more stimulation. The mind and body doesn’t truly relax in those situations.

Those who practice lucid dreaming almost always find they are more rested and have a much better interaction with their sleep in general. This is one of the top benefits of lucid dreaming that people report.

Everyone loves a good sleep.

Dramatically Improve Your Memory

Your sleep is absolutely essential in solidifying your memories of waking life.

Dreams solidify what is called episodic memory, while deep sleep solidifies semantic memory. Episodic memory is like muscle memory, the memory of your body. It is the memory you need to learn new skills and perfect the ones you have already.

Semantic memory is basically the ability to remember facts. Think of an atlas.

If you can remember every fact and figure from an atlas, then you have great semantic memory. Lucid dreaming and lucid sleep allows you to solidify everything you learned during the day, as well as consciously choosing what other things you want to solidify in your memory.

When students ask about the benefits of lucid dreaming, this is often at the top of their interest list.

Learn a Delightful Skill in One Night

All professional athletes dream of their sport during the night.

Many use visualization to improve their game. Why?

Because when they dream of scoring a goal, the pattern of neuronal activation in their brain is almost the same as if they were actually scoring that goal.

That means the best athletes train when they dream too.

This whole world is open to you during conscious dreaming.

You can decide to learn guitar, do a handstand, ride a motorcycle, or any other skill you might want to learn. You can do it in a safe and fun environment.

Try it out.

These are just 5 benefits of lucid dreaming. If I listed all 3,456,789 benefits you would never make it through this article. If you are a lucid dreamer already, what benefits have you noticed in your life? Add them in the comments below.

Is lucid dreaming dangerous? I hear this question so many times, and it’s asked in many different forms. Maybe you’ve heard a story about someone getting scared while trying to lucid dream, or you’re afraid of what’s inside your own mind.

Any time people approach a foreign subject, this is a legitimate concern to explore. As doctor’s say: “First of all, do no harm.”

You’ll learn later what not to do in a lucid dream, but it’s a good idea to let go of those stories you’ve heard as you read this. Too much hyped up fear around lucid dreaming.

Stupidly Sleepwalking Through Waking Life

When someone asks me if lucid dreaming is dangerous I often reply by asking: “Is it dangerous to be aware and present during waking life?”

So many of us sleepwalk through our waking life and have a comatose consciousness during sleep. It’s almost as if that time doesn’t even exist for us.

Lucid dreaming gives us hours of our lives back.

People’s #1 Hidden Fear

The #1 fear most people express to me when they ask “Is lucid dreaming dangerous?” is the following: their brain will not receive the necessary rest and recharging it requires each night.

They are worried that they are going against the natural rythyms of the body by awakening in their dreams.

Our Wondrous Brain and its Sensational Sleep

Is lucid dreaming dangerous?During deep sleep, our brainwaves synchronize, which gives the body a chance to heal and regenerate.

Our deep sleep helps solidify semantic memory: facts, details, etc. When we dream, we solidify our episodic memory: muscle memory, kinesthetic memory, etc.

So if we want to learn to play a new sport such as basketball, losing precious dream time would make our progress slower.

Skyrocket Your Conscious Action in Dreams

When you awaken in your dreams, you do not lose that sleep, you simply have the ability to consciously direct it.

If you would like to practice shooting a basketball in your sleep to improve your ability, you can do that when you dream. You do not even have to control your dream, you can let it come to you.

But you do get to choose how you want to react to what comes your way.

Waking up Feeling Energized and Uncensored

I personally always feel energized and recharged when I lucid dream.

I feel a sense of accomplishment, the thrill of exploring, and the pleasant after effects of whatever actions I chose to pursue in the dream (so often flying or soaring through the sky).

Every lucid dreamer I’ve interacted with gives similar positive reports of the positive effects they notice.

Caution: Everything in Moderation

Is lucid dreaming dangerous? Is eating food dangerous? Is sitting in bed dangerous?

Everything in moderation.

Although I have found a strong dedication and awareness to be incredibly helpful in succeeding with lucid dreaming, we all do have to be careful not to become obsessive or unbalanced.

If you experiment with your sleep schedule, make sure you are doing so in a way that will not compromise your health. In general it is best to sleep between 6 – 8.5 hours each night depending on your age.

Anything more or less for a long period of time can cause negative effects to arise in the body and brain.

Beware the Hazards of Supplements

If you do decide to explore the use of certain supplements like B6 to increase your lucid dreaming potential, make sure you follow all the necessary precautions when doing so.

I explored every type of supplement, herb, and device in the beginning and in the end found that none of them were necessary for success.

Please proceed carefully and do your research whenever using supplements to enhance your lucid dreaming practice. This is very important.

1000s of Years of Proof

Awakening in your dreams is a perfectly safe activity and should not be feared.

Bringing more awareness into our lives is a main practice of most spiritual systems, and brings countless positive benefits. Tibetans and yogis have been lucid dreaming consistently for thousands of years to hone their awareness and expand consciousness.

The next time you ask “is lucid dreaming dangerous?” try asking a different question instead: “Would I rather enter a comatose state of consciousness, or wake up feeling energized after spending the night exploring, expanding, and healing myself?”
